STAAR Surgical Posts 111% Revenue Surge in Q2 2026, Fueled by China EVO Plus Demand
STAAR Surgical Delivers Strong Q2 Beat as China Demand and Product Momentum Accelerate
STAAR Surgical (NASDAQ: STAA), the medical device company specializing in implantable lens technology, posted second-quarter 2026 results that surpassed Wall Street forecasts on both the top and bottom lines, with revenue more than doubling year over year. Despite the impressive numbers, the stock slipped from $25.41 to $24.76 following the report, a reaction analysts attribute to investor uncertainty around whether the growth pace can be maintained.
Key Financial Highlights
For the quarter ended in CY2026 Q2, STAAR Surgical reported revenue of $93.54 million, representing 111% year-over-year growth and coming in 3.3% ahead of the analyst consensus estimate of $90.51 million. Non-GAAP earnings per share reached $0.25, beating estimates of $0.23 by 9.7%.
Adjusted EBITDA came in at $20 million — a 13.4% beat versus the $17.64 million consensus — translating to a 21.4% EBITDA margin. Perhaps most striking was the operating margin swing: from -67.6% in the same quarter of the prior year to a positive 10.8% in Q2 2026. The company's market capitalization stands at approximately $1.27 billion.
What's Driving the Growth
Management pointed to three core engines powering the quarter's outperformance.
EVO Plus in China: The expanded rollout of the EVO Plus lens in China exceeded internal projections, with the product now accounting for roughly one-third of unit sales in the country. CEO Warren Foust was careful to characterize this as demand-driven growth rather than channel inventory build — a distinction that matters to investors wary of artificial revenue inflation.
Shifting Preference Away from Laser Procedures: Globally, lens-based refractive procedures are gaining ground on laser-based alternatives such as LASIK. STAAR Surgical credits the EVO lens's reversibility and non-corneal approach as key differentiators influencing both patient and surgeon preferences, contributing to market share gains in multiple geographies.
U.S. and EMEA Momentum: Outside of China, the company recorded another quarter of double-digit growth in both the United States and the EMEA region (excluding the Middle East), driven by growing surgeon adoption and rising patient interest in non-laser vision correction alternatives.
Operational Milestones
The quarter also marked the completion of a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system rollout, which management described as a foundational step toward improved business visibility and future AI-enabled operational capabilities. CFO Deborah Andrews noted that restructuring and ERP consulting costs are expected to decline in coming quarters, supporting further margin improvement.
The company also reached a meaningful profitability milestone, returning to both positive net income and free cash flow — outcomes supported by disciplined expense management alongside strong revenue growth.
Challenges and Headwinds to Monitor
Management did not shy away from acknowledging the more difficult parts of the operating environment. Tariff pressures and currency volatility — particularly across Asian markets — remain meaningful headwinds. To address tariff-related margin drag, STAAR Surgical is working to shift all manufacturing destined for China to its Switzerland facilities by year-end.
Additionally, the overall refractive surgery market is experiencing uneven conditions, and management flagged that Q3 and Q4 are expected to be sequentially softer than Q2, partly due to seasonal patterns in China where demand is typically stronger in the first half of the year.
Looking Ahead: Innovation and Expansion
Looking beyond near-term results, STAAR Surgical is investing in broadening its product portfolio. The company recently hired a chief technology officer to lead R&D efforts, and management indicated that first-in-human clinical studies for next-generation lens technologies are expected soon. Foust summarized the strategic direction plainly: "Our focus remains on revenue growth, expanding profitability, and advancing innovation."
Investors and analysts will be watching several key developments in the quarters ahead: whether EVO Plus supply can keep pace with Chinese demand, the execution of the manufacturing transition to Switzerland, and the pace of new product development under the expanded R&D framework. Progress in U.S. market penetration will also serve as an important indicator of the company's ability to grow beyond its China-centric revenue base.
