Space Stocks Pull Back From Peak Levels as Valuation Questions Mount
The space sector experienced a burst of enthusiasm earlier this year when Space Exploration Companies (NASDAQ: SPCX) — the publicly traded entity behind SpaceX — completed its highly anticipated IPO in early June 2026. The excitement proved short-lived, however, as investors began scrutinizing whether the broader space economy could deliver growth rates substantial enough to support lofty valuations and significant ongoing cash expenditures.
Despite the near-term turbulence, the long-term growth narrative for the space industry remains compelling. McKinsey projects the global space economy will reach $1.8 trillion by 2035, fueled by dramatic reductions in launch costs, advances in hardware technology, and expanding investment from both government agencies and private enterprises.
SpaceX: Transforming the Economics of Space Access
SpaceX has fundamentally reshaped what it costs to reach orbit. One of the company's most consequential engineering achievements was the development of reusable first-stage rocket boosters. Before SpaceX pioneered this technology, boosters were single-use components that were jettisoned into the ocean after each mission. SpaceX's vertical landing system now allows those same boosters to be recovered and reused anywhere from 15 to 20 times — dramatically compressing per-launch costs.
That cost advantage has enabled SpaceX to build out its Starlink broadband constellation, which now comprises thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit serving millions of customers globally. The company has also established itself as a launch partner for a range of commercial and government clients, including AST SpaceMobile, Globalstar, Planet Labs, and Intuitive Machines.
The company's cash burn remains a focal point of concern for investors. Following SpaceX's August 4 earnings call, analysts at Piper Sandler estimated capital expenditures could approach $65 billion in 2027 — approximately $17 billion above prior expectations. Those outlays are tied to several ambitious initiatives, including the development of the Starship vehicle, expansion of the Starlink satellite fleet, and early-stage exploration of orbital data centers.
On the revenue side, CEO Elon Musk has set a target of reaching a $100 billion annualized revenue run rate by December 2026. He also pulled forward the timeline for achieving $1 trillion in annual revenue to 2030, noting there is a "non-zero chance" of hitting that figure as early as 2029.
Shares of SpaceX have declined roughly 49% from their recent high. Analysts also note that as the post-IPO lockup period expires, a wave of newly eligible shares entering the market could add further downward pressure on the stock if demand doesn't absorb the additional supply.
Rocket Lab: Building an End-to-End Space Business
While SpaceX commands the largest share of the launch market, Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB) has carved out a meaningful position by offering a reliable, independent alternative for customers seeking options beyond the market leader. The company's Electron rocket currently holds the distinction of being the second-most-utilized launch vehicle in the United States.
Electron's payload capacity — approximately 300 kilograms — is considerably smaller than SpaceX's Falcon 9, which can carry up to 22,800 kilograms. That constraint, however, also represents a strategic advantage: smaller rockets can place compact satellites into precise orbits more cost-effectively than larger vehicles designed for heavier payloads.
Rocket Lab is also expanding into the defense sector through its HASTE program — the Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron. This suborbital variant of the Electron rocket is capable of carrying payloads up to 700 kilograms and provides U.S. military and defense agencies with cost-efficient test flights that expose payloads to hypersonic flight conditions.
On July 27, the company disclosed it had been awarded a $266 million contract from the U.S. Space Force, covering 12 suborbital launches with options for up to six additional missions under the Rocket Systems Launch Program. CEO Sir Peter Beck described the award as reflecting "the Space Force's confidence in our ability to meet their urgent national security demands with speed, responsiveness, and scale."
Beyond launch services, Rocket Lab operates a diversified space systems division that manufactures components, tools, and software for satellite operators and space exploration missions. The company also announced plans to acquire Iridium Communications for $8 billion, a move that would give it direct exposure to the satellite services market — a different segment from Starlink's consumer broadband focus.
What to Watch Going Forward
Both companies are operating at a pivotal point. SpaceX is balancing massive capital commitments against ambitious revenue targets, while Rocket Lab is executing a vertical integration strategy that extends well beyond its original launch-focused identity.
Rocket Lab shares have declined approximately 51% from their recent peak, a pullback that has drawn renewed attention to the stock from investors tracking long-term space economy trends. For those monitoring the sector, key data points to watch include SpaceX's lockup expiration timeline, quarterly revenue updates relative to Musk's $100 billion run-rate target, and Rocket Lab's progress integrating the Iridium acquisition into its broader business model.
