RTX Delivers Strong Q2 Beat, Lifts Annual Guidance

Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) sent its shares climbing 5.2% to $204.90 on Thursday after the aerospace and defense heavyweight posted second-quarter 2026 results that topped Wall Street expectations on both the top and bottom lines, while simultaneously raising its full-year financial targets.

Q2 Numbers at a Glance

RTX generated $24.71 billion in quarterly revenue, marking a 14.5% increase compared to the same period last year and surpassing analyst consensus estimates of $22.91 billion by a notable 7.8%. The earnings picture was equally strong — adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.89, beating the analyst consensus of $1.66 by 13.7% and representing a meaningful improvement from the $1.56 per share recorded in Q2 2025.

Operating margin expanded to 11.4% during the quarter, up from 9.9% in the year-ago period, reflecting improved operational efficiency across the business. Perhaps one of the most striking data points was free cash flow, which surged to $2.88 billion — a dramatic turnaround from negative $72 million in the prior-year quarter.

Guidance Raised Across the Board

Management took the opportunity to upgrade its financial outlook for the full year. The company lifted its revenue guidance midpoint to $95.5 billion, up from the previous $93 billion — a 2.7% increase that came in approximately 1.5% above what analysts had been modeling. On the earnings front, RTX raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance midpoint to $7.18, a 5.5% increase from prior targets.

RTX currently carries a market capitalization of approximately $262.4 billion, cementing its position as one of the largest players in the global defense and aerospace landscape.

Putting Performance in Context

RTX's track record over a longer horizon offers additional perspective on the company's trajectory. Over the past five years, the company has grown revenue at a compounded annual rate of 8.3%, slightly ahead of the broader industrials sector average. More recently, its two-year annualized revenue growth has accelerated to 9.6%, suggesting demand momentum has picked up.

Profitability trends are similarly constructive. Operating margins have expanded by 3.3 percentage points over the last five years, reflecting the operating leverage that comes with consistent revenue growth. EPS has grown at a five-year compounded annual rate of 16.3%, outpacing revenue growth — a dynamic driven by both margin expansion and a 5.4% reduction in diluted share count through buyback activity.

The company's two-year annualized EPS growth of 14.4%, while healthy, does trail the five-year trend slightly, a data point worth monitoring.

What Analysts Expect Next

Despite the strong quarterly showing, sell-side analysts project revenue growth of roughly 4% over the next 12 months — a notable deceleration from the pace seen over the past two years. Full-year EPS is expected to reach $7.12, representing approximately 2.9% growth from the $6.92 estimated for the current fiscal year.

The gap between recent performance and forward projections may reflect analyst caution around defense budget cycles, geopolitical uncertainties, or supply chain normalization dynamics — factors that tend to influence long-cycle aerospace and defense businesses.

What Investors Are Watching

With a history rooted in technological innovation — the company traces its origins to refrigeration technology before evolving into a defense and aerospace powerhouse — RTX has diversified its portfolio across commercial aviation, missile systems, and advanced sensing technologies.

Key metrics to track in coming quarters include the sustainability of the free cash flow recovery, whether margin expansion continues as the company scales, and how defense budget priorities in the U.S. and allied nations translate into order backlog growth. The company's raised guidance sets a high bar for the second half of 2026, and execution against those targets will be closely scrutinized by the investment community.
