Q1 Apparel Retail Scorecard: Victoria's Secret Surges While Zumiez and Lululemon Struggle with Guidance

Apparel Retailers Post Mixed Q1 Results as Guidance Concerns Weigh on Several Names

With the latest earnings season now in the rearview mirror, a clearer picture has emerged for the apparel retail sector. Eight companies in the space collectively reported Q1 results that were largely satisfactory, with combined revenues edging past analyst consensus estimates by approximately 1%. However, forward guidance told a more complicated story — and the market has responded accordingly.

As a group, the apparel retailers tracked saw their share prices rise an average of 5.7% following earnings releases. But that headline figure masks significant divergence beneath the surface, with some stocks soaring while others took sharp hits on disappointing outlooks.

Zumiez Falls Despite Modest Revenue Growth

Zumiez (NASDAQ: ZUMZ), the specialty retailer known for its street and skate culture merchandise and its branded "Zumiez Stash Members" store associate program, posted Q1 revenues of $193.3 million — a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year. The result landed in line with what analysts had anticipated.

Despite the revenue match, the broader earnings picture disappointed investors. Both EPS guidance and revenue guidance for the upcoming quarter came in meaningfully below analyst expectations, triggering a sharp market reaction. ZUMZ shares have fallen 16.8% since the report, with the stock currently changing hands at $19.53.

CEO Rick Brooks offered a measured response, stating: "We continue to make important progress towards sustained profitable growth."

Tilly's Leads the Pack on Growth — But Still Slides

Among the eight retailers tracked, Tilly's (NYSE: TLYS) put up the strongest quarter by several measures. The teen and young adult-focused retailer, which leans heavily into skate and surf aesthetics, recorded Q1 revenues of $124.7 million — up 15.9% year over year and beating analyst estimates by 2.8%. The company also topped gross margin expectations and issued next-quarter EPS guidance above consensus.

Tilly's claimed the top spot for analyst estimate beats, the highest guidance raise, and the fastest revenue growth in the group. Yet despite those achievements, the stock has dropped 18.5% since reporting and currently trades at $3.62 — a reminder that even strong fundamentals don't guarantee positive price reactions in the current environment.

Lululemon Posts Softest Guidance in the Group

At the other end of the spectrum, Lululemon (NASDAQ: LULU) delivered what analysts characterized as the weakest guidance update among its peers. The athletic apparel giant — which serves both performance athletes and lifestyle-oriented consumers — reported Q1 revenues of $2.47 billion, a 4.3% year-over-year increase that surpassed estimates by 1.7%.

However, the company's full-year EPS guidance and next-quarter EPS guidance both missed analyst expectations significantly. Lululemon registered both the weakest quarterly guidance update and the weakest full-year guidance revision in the group. Shares have declined 5.2% since the release, with LULU currently trading at $118.44.

Urban Outfitters Delivers Solid All-Around Quarter

Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN) stood out as one of the more balanced performers. The retailer — which began as a vintage goods seller and now caters to trend-conscious teens and young adults — reported Q1 revenues of $1.48 billion, up 11.4% year over year and ahead of estimates by 1.4%. The company also beat on EPS and narrowly edged above gross margin forecasts. URBN shares are up 6% since reporting and currently trade at $76.00.

Victoria's Secret Steals the Show

The standout performer of the group was undoubtedly Victoria's Secret (NYSE: VSXY). The intimate apparel and beauty brand, which was spun off from L Brands in 2020, reported Q1 revenues of $1.56 billion — a 15.3% year-over-year surge that beat analyst estimates by 2.6%. The company also outperformed on EPS and impressed on gross margins.

Perhaps most notably, Victoria's Secret delivered the highest full-year guidance raise among all eight retailers tracked. The market responded emphatically: VSXY shares have climbed 64.9% since the earnings release and currently trade at $89.55.

Broader Market Context

The mixed apparel earnings results are unfolding against a shifting macroeconomic backdrop. Investor attention has rotated through several dominant narratives over recent months — from concerns about artificial intelligence disrupting software competitive moats in late 2025 and early 2026, to geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict in spring 2026, which briefly elevated fears around oil prices and inflation before energy markets stabilized.

With those macro headwinds appearing to settle, the focus is returning to company-level fundamentals — making guidance clarity increasingly important for retailers heading into the second half of the year. The divergence in post-earnings stock performance across this group of eight apparel names suggests investors are carefully distinguishing between companies with durable growth trajectories and those facing near-term profitability pressures.
